RMBCH’s contribution on National Trails Day includes working on the Wilson Creek / Deer Haven Trail. We will meet at the trailhead at 9:00 a.m. with safety briefing at 9:30 a.m., then we ride!
Becky Schiola and Mary Mowery are hosting this work ride. RSVP to Becky at (719) 429-2481 to get clear directions and what to expect. Make sure to let her know if you have a current sawyer certification.
There is room for camping in a large open field at the trailhead. Water is iffy on the trail so bring water for yourself and your horse. I'm going in on Friday 6/5 late afternoon to set up my trailer and intend on staying over til Sunday. If anyone wants to "fun ride" on Sunday we can.
DIRECTIONS:
From Canon City take US 50 west past the rafting places to SH9 north (right) Go 8 miles to the top of the hill and turn
Right on CR11 towards Cripple Creek. Go 5.2 miles. You'll be going down a hill, cross a cattle guard and turn right. There's a sign that says Deer Haven. Go 3.5 miles on the dirt road. The trailhead is on your right.
Coordinates: 38.69063 N105.43237 W.
I'd like to start the ride at 9 am. This should be fun.
Please text me if you're coming so we'll wait for you.

Saturday, May 23rd - Grape Creek work ride – Trail Lead Michelle
Canon City, CO 10:00 am Safety Briefing, 10:30 AM Ride Start.
RSVP to rmbch.michelle@gmail.com or text to (719) 216-2066 by Friday, May 22nd at 8:00 pm. This is an intro to a work ride. It will be using light loppers. Note: We will provide tools for you to carry, and you will need a backpack, saddlebag, or we can show you how to strap it to the saddle. If you prefer your own tools, please bring them along; just make sure they are easily identifiable as your own, not the chapter's. The leaders will not be carrying extras. RMBCH will provide snacks. Bring your own lunch and water to keep hydrated.
There will be many water crossings. Please read all below
10:30 am Ride start time. Please arrive at least half an hour early to tack up and pack tools! Ecology Park Trailhead, right outside Canon City (available on Google Maps). There is ample rig parking in a circular gravel lot.
The water can be at varying depths. Each crossing is different, and there will be at least 30. Your horse must be ok with water crossings, mud, and technical water entries. You will likely get wet. Please bring an extra set of clothes, and something underneath that you don't mind stripping down to and getting wet if you have to be in the water to clear an entry point, lead a horse, etc.
It will be Hot - you are welcome to swim! There are plenty of places to sit in the river.
Terrain, some rocks. Mainly gravel-road-type consistency and sand. Lots of mud at river crossings, and there are large rocks in the river. There are cholla cacti, so I always bring tweezers to pull any small spines out of the horse's legs at the end.
This is a work ride where we will be performing trail trimming to make the trail safer and accessible for everyone at the water crossings. There will be frequent ups and downs of your horse, and we will be tying your equine to trees while they wait. Please bring a lead line or cross ties to tie horses up with. We will ride to an area that needs work, then typically work on that area for an hour or more to clear it. There are two fresh trees down. Please bring your garden shears, Garden loppers, and anything you can carry on a horse that trims small branches/willows. We have extra loppers as well, but you would need to carry them on your equine. We can show you how. Backpack or saddlebag recommended. The leaders will not be carrying extra tools.
RMBCH will provide snacks and ice water at the parking lot. Bring your lunch and LOTS to drink on the trail. It will be hot. Sunscreen, gloves. No Dogs or Stallions on RMBCH Rides
The Bank/Shelf Road is north of Canyon City in the Red Canyon area. The equestrian camping is dry camping…no amenities. Water for horses/people will need to be brought. There are a few corrals for horses, part of the work ride is to clean up the weeds so that all the corrals can be used. Depending on how many people sign up, there may have to be other containment options, such as electric corrals, highline between trailers as there are no trees or tying horses to trailers. The area is extremely rocky so shoes/boots would be required. There is one downed tree on one of the trails that needs to be removed and another trail that needs to be trimmed up for easier/safer riding. If people want to sign up and not ride, they could help with corral clean up, and the trails should be able to be done in two days. The rides are approximately 13-15 miles…there is water for the horses in a few stock tanks and a small stream.
