This will be an excellent opportunity to train your horse for mountain terrain, obstacle course, and bridge crossings, and to enjoy an easy, relaxing ride with your horse and friends. On the trail is a great training opportunity for your horse. There is plenty of room to do circles or ride three across. The obstacles range from green, blue, and black to double black diamond, great for all levels of riding. The trail is easy and wide enough to ride side by side. The trail is a perfect opportunity for horses new to trail riding. We will start with the riding-the-trail portion first.

Saturday, May 23rd - Grape Creek work ride – Trail Lead Michelle
Canon City, CO 10:00 am Safety Briefing, 10:30 AM Ride Start. RSVP by May 18th
RSVP to rmbch.michelle@gmail.com or text to (719) 216-2066 by Friday, May 22nd at 8:00 pm. This is an intro to a work ride. It will be using light loppers. Note: We will provide tools for you to carry, and you will need a backpack, saddlebag, or we can show you how to strap it to the saddle. If you prefer your own tools, please bring them along; just make sure they are easily identifiable as your own, not the chapter's. The leaders will not be carrying extras. RMBCH will provide snacks. Bring your own lunch and water to keep hydrated.
If this is your first ride, the cost is $5, and you can apply it toward membership if you join within a week.
There will be many water crossings. Please read all below
10:30 am Ride start time. Please arrive at least half an hour early to tack up and pack tools! Ecology Park Trailhead, right outside Canon City (available on Google Maps). There is ample rig parking in a circular gravel lot.
The water can be at varying depths. Each crossing is different, and there will be at least 30. Your horse must be ok with water crossings, mud, and technical water entries. You will likely get wet. Please bring an extra set of clothes, and something underneath that you don't mind stripping down to and getting wet if you have to be in the water to clear an entry point, lead a horse, etc.
It will be Hot - you are welcome to swim! There are plenty of places to sit in the river.
Terrain, some rocks. Mainly gravel-road-type consistency and sand. Lots of mud at river crossings, and there are large rocks in the river. There are cholla cacti, so I always bring tweezers to pull any small spines out of the horse's legs at the end.
This is a work ride where we will be performing trail trimming to make the trail safer and accessible for everyone at the water crossings. There will be frequent ups and downs of your horse, and we will be tying your equine to trees while they wait. Please bring a lead line or cross ties to tie horses up with. We will ride to an area that needs work, then typically work on that area for an hour or more to clear it. There are two fresh trees down. Please bring your garden shears, Garden loppers, and anything you can carry on a horse that trims small branches/willows. We have extra loppers as well, but you would need to carry them on your equine. We can show you how. Backpack or saddlebag recommended. The leaders will not be carrying extra tools.
RMBCH will provide snacks and ice water at the parking lot. Bring your lunch and LOTS to drink on the trail. It will be hot. Sunscreen, gloves. No Dogs or Stallions on RMBCH Rides

Trail Lead Michelle
Need a Co-Lead
The trails are rocky, it's highly recommended that horses have shoes or booties.
July 11th 7:00 pm
Campground is a first-come, first-served dispersed campground with limited camping sites. There is no potable water source and no toilets. There is a creek to get water for the horses. At the trail head, there are four permanent horse pens. There is no guarantee of getting a horse pen, so plan accordingly.
For those new to camping with horses, we will start the morning at 7:00 pm. We will cover highline and electric fence as methods of horse containment. You will learn what to take for water, supplements, feed, buckets, and first aid on a work ride. We will cover saddle bags and what recommended items to take into the outback for long work or fun day rides. You will also learn about different tools used on a work ride, how to use them safely, and how to store them on the trail and on your horse.
